The menace of the outside world lies beyond a locked, centrally placed front door (designer Sabine Dargent’s eyesore settings for both Druid Theatre productions are superb).

Sabine Dargent’s design work is eye-catching and cool, without at all violating the play’s stark spirit. The house is painted gray, but with glitter all over the walls. The sad pink dinette set is something you wouldn’t give your worst enemy, but it matches the delicious-looking sponge cake. There’s a door that opens onto a painted drop that perfectly represents the characters’ changing moods, and there are neato vintage costumes for Clara and Breda when they re-enact their private theatrical tragedies.
