This is extraordinary theatre, as difficult as it is terrifying, with outstanding performances all round (Olga Wehrly is the ageless, beautiful Penelope) and frenetically effective direction from Mikel Murphy in Sabine Dargent’s wonderful set lit by Paul Keogan.

Set designer Sabine Dargent’s grotty swimming pool is an impressive underworld, a place where myth and magic can commune. Her design allows Walsh to set burlesque set-pieces – magic tricks, manic costume changes, and stagy violence – against speeches of profound philosophical depth.
